University of California San Francisco (UCSF) is currently employing Patient Care Assistants (PCAs). A PCA receives daily assignments and functions under the supervision of Registered Nurses to carry out direct patient care responsibilities. All patient care team members act to meet patient needs and learn new skills to achieve quality patient care and customer service.

Team members promote a cooperative working relationship with each other, other staff, and the public by facilitating and enhancing communication, displaying honesty and respect, displaying sensitivity to age-specific needs and cultural differences, and expressing and accepting feedback in a professional manner.

Job Department

The Patient Care Assistants are needed under the Surgical / Oncology unit of UCSF. The unit cares for a variety of oncology and surgical patients including those with colorectal, gynecological, urological, head and neck, liver and pancreatic diseases. Complex wound care, ostomy care and tracheotomy care make patient education a priority for both the patients and their caregivers after discharge. There are  opportunities under this unit for nurses to coordinate innovative treatment modalities for the oncology patient population. Nurses work in an area where a dynamic, interdisciplinary, supportive and healing approach is the focus. This unit also provides the opportunity to work in a cutting edge environment were excellent care can be provided in a patient and family focused setting.

Required Qualifications

To be employed as a PCA at UCSF, you must have:

  • Basic computer skills
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic computations (addition and subtraction)
  • Ability to work effectively within a team
  • Ability to understand and communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to organize and effectively set priorities
  • Ability to satisfactorily perform job duties as defined in the job description
  • Ability to carry out duties of first responder in emergency situations
  • Willingness to be taught/learn new skills
  • Successfully completed your Medical Center Patient Care Assistant training
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations
