Mandela Rhodes Scholarship for African Students in South Africa

Applications are now open for the 2022/23 Mandela Rhodes Scholarship for African Students in South Africa. The scholarship combines financial support with a leadership programme that will challenge you, grow you, and connect you to young African changemakers.

Sponsored by the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, the scholarship is a fully funded programme open for young African scholars between the ages of 19 and 29 years.

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation is one of Nelson Mandela’s three official legacy organisations, founded in 2003 in partnership with the Rhodes Trust. The Foundation’s core objective has been to find, fund, and empower young Africans who aspire towards the kind of leadership Mr Mandela. Talented leaders who can bridge the historic divides and use their talents for the betterment of their societies and Africa at large.

Scholarship benefits

If you are selected for Mandela Rhodes Scholarship, you will be offered a comprehensive funding for the core costs associated with your studies.

The scholarship covers tuition fee for a one-year Honours degree or a two-year Masters degree in any field at a recognised South African institution of higher education. You will be provided with your tuition and registration fees, allowances for study materials, research, and medical aid, accommodation and meals, personal allowance and economy class travel to and from your home country to your South African university at the beginning and end of your degree.

Scholarship duration

1 year for Honours degree and 2 years for Masters degree.

Eligibility criteria for Mandela Rhodes Scholarship

To be eligible for the scholarship, you must:

  • Be a citizen of any African country
  • Be between the ages of 19 and 29 years
  • Have a first degree with above average academic results (70% or upper second)

  • Notification of interview result by end of October
  • Acceptance are to be secured by selected candidates between October and December
  • Selected candidates are to get their study visa for travel to South Africa in January
