Philip Seymour Hoffman Scholarship at at NYU’s Tisch School

Philip Seymour Hoffman was an American actor who was known for his distinctive supporting and character roles—typically lowlifes, eccentrics, underdogs, and misfits. He featured in many films and theatrical productions, including leading roles, from the early 1990s to 2014 when he died.

In honour of Late Philip Seymour Hoffman, NYU Tisch School of the Arts which is his alma mater has established a scholarship scheme to support Tisch drama students who demonstrate financial need, academic merit and artistic talent.

James Declan Tobin, an Irish producer, while donating the initial $50,000 funding for the scholarship noted that Philip Seymour Hoffman is one of the greatest actors of our generation. Tobin was inspired by spending time with the Hoffman family. He added that “this scholarship will inspire Tisch Drama students to follow Hoffman’s enchanted ways on both the screen and the stage, embodying those moments that are so truthfully evocative of the human experience, and give them the opportunity to thrive”. He further maintained that “Phil was beloved by his peers and his fans and he often expressed gratitude and love to those around him. With this scholarship, I hope to continue Phil’s legacy of warmth and generosity by creating pathways for Tisch Drama students to reach similar heights”.
